Red Flag Campaign Summer Institute

SUMMER INSTITUTE

This July, Appalachian State University will hold its very first Red Flag Campaign Summer Institute. The Red Flag Campaign (RFC) focuses on active bystander intervention in regards to interpersonal, dating and sexual violence. This fortunate opportunity is accredited to the AVON grant Red Flag Campaign received to create a 3 day institute for bystander intervention education.  This is a great opportunity to meet and get to know other new students while learning about sexual, dating an interpersonal violence and how to be an active bystander. Specifically, participants have the opportunity to:

  • Enhance knowledge and increase awareness of interpersonal, dating, and sexual violence.
  • Learn to identify warning behaviors that constitute sexual violence.
  • Teach the appropriate skills to intervene safely and effectively, in both direct and indirect ways.
  • Learn the role of preventing sexual violence on Appalachian State University’s campus.
  • Learn about yourself, how you work with others, and how you will become a part of the ASU and Boone community.

After our program we hope attendees move forward in their Appalachian careers as active bystanders in the community and partake in further involvement with campus’ “It’s Up to Me” initiatives.

Who attends Summer Institute?

This 3-day institute is free and offered to incoming first-year students. Fifteen incoming first year students dedicated to ending sexual violence on our campus will be selected for this training. This institute will be a safe and open atmosphere facilitated by Appalachian State staff and community members. All sessions take place on-campus, and participants stay in residence halls during the institute.
