Red Flag Educators

What do Red Flag Educators Do?

Appalachian State University's Red Flag Educators (RFEs) have a responsibility for creating Active Bystanders on campus and in the community. They educate peers on “Red Flags” of sexual, interpersonal, and dating violence while encouraging the Appalachian community to be active bystanders. RFEs have a responsibility to present to peer groups, organizations, classes, etc. on topics of interpersonal violence, active bystander intervention, and rape culture.

All Red Flag Educators are thoroughly trained in the following:

  • Sexual, Interpersonal, and Dating Violence
  • Primary Prevention
  • Red Flags
  • Active Bystander Intervention
  • Public Speaking
  • How to Make a Successful Referral
  • Resources Both On and Off Campus
  • Handling Disclosures
  • Rape Culture

Red Flag Educators will also have the opportunity to volunteer and educate at different events on/off campus.

What are the Qualifications to be a RFE?

Red Flag Educators must:

  • Be an enrolled student at Appalachian State University
  • Have and maintain a GPA 2.5
  • Complete an application and interview process (if applicable)
  • Be dedicated to ending sexual violence
  • Serve a one-year commitment as a RFE (fall/spring semester) 
  • Be in good disciplinary standing with the University
  • Become CPE Certified
    • Training dates will be listed on the application

What is the Time Commitment?

Educators are required to participate in a mandatory training/retreat prior to the start of the fall semester. Once the semester begins, Educators will meet Fridays from 3:00-4:30 for training on a weekly basis.
